Release of the NIPO Fieldwork System 1.10

On 28 May 2008 we have sent out the new release of the NIPO Fieldwork System 1.10 for CATI/Web Interviewing.

The latest improvements of your software system include these features:
*NEXTRECORD command to interview multiple respondents on same telephone contact.
*SQLADD to add records in any database table.
MultiByte Character Fields to save multi-byte languages (Chinese, Japanese, etc) in non-unicode data files.
*VCONTROL in *GRID question.
User interface of NIPO FMS has been updated.
Connect NIPO FMS Client to NIPO FMS Server via TCP/IP.
Custom Template for creating extra fields in new Sample tables.
Interval for sending Emails to prevent spam labeling.
Sort order on NIPO CATI/Web Master shown in NIPO FMS Client.
Sorting grids in NIPO FMS: Order is visible in column header.

*NEXTRECORD command to interview multiple respondents on same telephone contact.
The NIPO CATI/Web Master now supports interviewing multiple respondents on the same telephonic contact. This way you can for instance interview all family members within the same household or interview several employees within the same company, with a single phone call.

For each (extra) respondent (e.g., family member) a separate record is used in the Sample table. These records can be available in advance or can be newly created. When some family members are not available at that moment, you can make appointments on these records.

In the NIPO ODIN Script Language 5.11.006 (32-bit) the new command *NEXTRECORD is implemented. With this command you can add records and/or update records in your Sample table and subsequently interview multiple respondents on the same telephone contact.

*SQLADD to add records in any database table.
In the NIPO ODIN Script Language 5.13 the new command *SQLADD is implemented. With this command you can create new records in a database table. This may be the current Sample table, the Sample for another survey or any other table within the same database.

*SQLADD can be seen as an extension of the commands *SQLGET, *SQLPUT and *NEXTRECORD.
- The command *SQLGET can retrieve data from any database table.
- The command *SQLPUT can update existing records in any database table.
- The command *SQLADD can write new records in any database table.
- The command *NEXTRECORD can write new records in the current Sample table, that will automatically be used by the NIPO CATI Master to interview multiple respondents on the same telephone contact.

MultiByte Character Fields to save multi-byte languages (Chinese, Japanese, etc) in non-unicode data files.
With the setting MBCSFields in the survey.INI, you can configure fields that should contain MultiByte characters, such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hebrew, Arabic, without having to save files in unicode. This way you can use your analysis tool, but still be able to store text from multi-byte languages in data files.

*VCONTROL in *GRID question.
You may now use the *VCONTROL command in a *FORM *GRID question, to disable specific columns based on a previous question.
- In the NIPO CATI Client and the NIPO CAPI Client columns and column header texts for horizontal categories that were not mentioned will be removed.
- In the NIPO Web Client columns and column header texts will not be removed, but will only be disabled.

User interface NIPO FMS has been updated.
The NIPO FMS Client user interface has been updated to look more modern and easier to use. Instead of tabs for the different sub-sections, a listing of the sub-sections is given to the left of the main screen. Also a wider range of colours is applied to increase ease of use of the application.

Connect NIPO FMS Client to NIPO FMS Server via TCP/IP.
You may now also connect with TCP/IP next to DCOM. In earlier versions of the NIPO FMS Client, only connections via DCOM were possible. In order to use a TCP/IP connection, the Borland Socketserver Service needs to be running on the NIPO FMS Server PC.

Note:
The Borland Socketserver Service is automatically installed with the installation of NIPO FMS Server Version 1.08 and higher. If you upgraded from an older version of NIPO FMS and did not install NIPO FMS 1.08 from the installer, please manually install the Borland Socketserver Service from the installation CD.

Custom Template for creating extra fields in new Sample tables.
Users can create templates that will create a Sample Table based on the user’s specification. All fields that are specified, or newly created, are included in the creation of the new Sample Table when the template is used (system fields are always included too).

A Sample Table template manager is used to create or adapt templates.

Interval for sending Emails to prevent spam labelling.
A delay can be set between consecutive e-mails that are sent to the mail server. This should avoid the problem that the receiving ISPs might regard the Emails as spam and block the FMS Server’s future e-mails.

Sort order on NIPO CATI/Web Master shown in NIPO FMS Client.
The sort order for the NIPO CATI/Web Master for Sample Table records can now be viewed from a menu within the Sample Table. At the same time, the current sort order of the Sample Table is given, and the user can easily see whether these are identical or not, and change the Master sort order if this is wanted.

Sorting grids in NIPO FMS: order is visible in column header.
When sorting grids (by clicking on the column header), the order of sorting is now visible in the column (field) header. The header sorted last will show a “1”, whereas a next most recently sorted header will get a “2”, etc. This way, the column that dictates the overall sorting of the grid is numbered “1”. The column with a “2” in the header is sorted within the overall sort. E.g., the records are sorted by Status (with a “1” in the header), but for each Status type, the records are sorted by InterviewNumber (with a “2” in the header).
